Czechia’s Battery Storage Market Enters The Utility-Scale Era

Czechia is emerging as one of Central Europe's most promising battery storage markets. After years of development dominated by behind-the-meter systems, regulatory reform, strong renewable growth, and increasing demand for grid flexibility are opening the door to a new phase of utility-scale BESS deployment.

 

The market is still relatively young, but recent figures suggest that the transition is already underway.

318 MWh Added in H1 2026

Czechia connected 318 MWh of new battery capacity in the first half of 2026, an 83% increase compared with the same period in 2025. More importantly, 12 standalone BESS projects totaling 108 MWh were connected during the period, compared with none in H1 2025.

 

According to the Czech Solar Association, large-scale storage already accounted for 143 MWh, or 45% of newly connected battery capacity, during the first half of 2026, up from just 20% a year earlier. At the same time, 8,079 of 9,346 new solar installations were paired with battery storage, showing that storage is becoming increasingly integrated into Czechia's renewable energy market. Regulation Is Unlocking a New Revenue Model

The key turning point has been regulatory reform. Amendments to Czechia's Energy Act have created a clearer framework for standalone storage and enabled batteries to participate in wholesale electricity markets and ancillary services, including FCR, aFRR and mFRR. Grid connection procedures have also been streamlined.

 

These changes are shifting batteries from simple energy backup assets toward flexible market participants capable of providing balancing services, energy trading and grid support.

 

The European Commission has also approved a €279 million state aid scheme supporting at least 1.5 GWh of new energy storage capacity in Czechia. The scheme provides competitive grants covering up to 50% of eligible investment costs and is open to storage technologies connected directly to transmission or distribution networks. Utility Scale BESS Is Moving From Pipeline to Construction

The scale of current projects illustrates how quickly the market is changing.

 

Energy trading company Second Foundation is developing three BESS projects totaling 307 MW and 620 MWh, with commissioning targeted for 2026. The portfolio includes a 200 MW/400 MWh project at Tušimice, an 87 MW/180 MWh project at Stonava and a 20 MW/40 MWh project at Vraňany.

 

Meanwhile, the 57 MW/120 MWh Lipnice BESS has entered operation at the end of July, becoming the largest completed battery storage project in Czechia, ahead of the recently commissioned 37.95 MW/41.7 MWh Modlany BESS.

These projects demonstrate that Czechia is moving beyond small distributed systems toward larger assets designed to provide direct value to the electricity system.

 

From Early Growth to a Central European Flexibility Hub

Aurora Energy Research estimates that Czechia's battery storage capacity could grow from approximately 2.3 GWh to 6 GWh by 2030. Around 98% of the installed capacity in 2024 was still behind the meter, highlighting the scale of the structural shift now underway.

 

Near-term project economics are also attracting investors. Aurora has estimated that a two-hour utility-scale BESS commissioned under current market conditions could achieve an IRR above 15%, supported by wholesale electricity price volatility and strong ancillary service revenues.

 

However, this opportunity is not without constraints. More than 1 GW of BESS capacity had already secured grid connection capacity by mid 2025, with some regions effectively reaching their available grid capacity. As deployment accelerates, grid access, connection timelines and future network tariffs are likely to become increasingly important factors in project development. Czechia's storage market is entering a new phase. The first stage was driven largely by behind-the-meter solar and self-consumption. The next stage will be shaped by standalone BESS, ancillary services, wholesale market participation, and grid flexibility.
